Matt Rodda Member of Parliament for Reading East
THE British Nepalese community in Reading invited Matt Rodda MP as their honorary guest at an evening which celebrated the GCSE successes of its students following the recent examination results from The Bulmershe School over the summer.
The event, the seventh such annual celebration, was organised by the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme Forum of Reading. Held in the ‘Warehouse’ community hall at Wy…cliffe Baptist Church on Sunday 10 September, Matt was delighted to present trophies, certificates and awards to students from Reading’s Nepalese community.
The number of students gaining 5 GCSE grades from A* to A has increased by 37.5% from the period 2008 to 2017, as has the number of students attaining grades A* to C. Of particular note, however, is the overall picture where across all GCSE grades during the last five years, Reading’s British Nepalese students have seen a 200% increase in improvement; from a 25% pass rate in 2012 to the current pass rate of 75%.
Leading the audience in a round of applause for the students, Matt said:
“I think this is an outstanding achievement and wish to congratulate the students on this outstanding achievement, and also thank the parents and the community for supporting them in securing this achievement. These results set the foundation of a great future for these young people, who should be commended for their hard work.”
He added:
“As a new community in this country, you [the British Nepalese in Reading] have achieved so much, and I am very honoured to have been invited here to share in this event with you today. Being able to deliver this level of improvement in such a short space of time is a great achievement, and I am campaigning for more resources to be put into our education system so that these results can continue.”
