Standing up for Reading

Safer communities

Under the Tories neighbourhood policing has been hit hard. Today, we’re launching our manifesto to change that.

You can read the Crime and Justice manifesto in full here.

Here are the five things you need to know about what Labour will do about crime and justice:

  1. We’ll put victims at the heart of the criminal justice system
Under the Tories there are fewer police on the beat and victims aren’t getting the justice they deserve. We’ll turn that around by introducing the country’s first ever Victims’ Law.
  2. We’ll prevent crime, not just react to it
We’ll protect neighbourhood policing, force perpetrators of anti-social behaviour to make good on the damage they cause and divert young adults away from crime.
  3. We’ll tackle child sexual exploitation and violence against women and girls
In government, we’ll bring in new powers to prevent an adult from contacting or communicating with a child if there is evidence of abuse and ban the use of so-called ‘community resolutions’ in instances of domestic violence.
  4. We’ll build a justice system fit for the 21st Century
The Tories have caused chaos in the prisons and probation system - putting public safety at risk. We’ll ensure prisoners spend more time working and learning and we will raise standards amongst prison officers.
  5. We’ll tackle extremism and the threat of terrorism
Under Labour, dangerous suspects will be subject to proper controls. We’ll overhaul the ‘Prevent’ programme to stop young people from being radicalised and strengthen the law to tackle rising hate crime.
