Reading Community Energy

It was good to see that hundreds of solar panels have been put on buildings owned by charities and community groups - through an innovative council scheme to support them and tackle climate change.

Reading Community Energy Society Ltd is supported by a council grant and by crowd funding and it helps groups benefit from the panels, giving them an income in the long term and reducing green houses gas emissions.

The scheme helps with up front costs, but the panels should pay for themselves many years before they need to be replaced. Once the costs of the panels are paid off they then generate a healthy income for the charities.

Reading's Strategic Planning and Transport Committee was given an update this week.
