It was a pleasure to attend the Reading Borough Council electric vehicles event held this week and to show my support for the Government and the council’s work in this important area.
Around 29 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions in Britain come from domestic transport, yet new technology, such as the introduction of electric vehicles can dramatically reduce this. Progress is being made with a fifth of new cars now being sold being electric vehicles.
I am pleased the council is treating this as a high priority and that it is working closely with the new Government.
This local work builds on the Government’s work to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
I also discussed the electrification of road transport with the Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood MP in a meeting earlier this week.
