The 80th anniversary of VE Day
Thursday 8 May 2025 marked 80 years since VE (Victory in Europe) Day when the Second World War came to an end in Europe. As your MP I am working with the Government and the Mayor of Reading, Glenn Dennis, to remember this significant event, both on the 8th of May, and as commemorations continue during the next few weeks.
I am writing to let you know how you can take part in events that will be taking place in Reading and across the country to reflect on the sacrifice of those from Britain and the Commonwealth who served, as well as those who supported the war effort on the home front. This includes events linked to the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Armed Forces Day on June 28th and the run up to the 80th anniversary of VJ Day when the war in Asia finished on August 15th.
I have included a survey on local history and on how veterans can access help and support from the Government, Reading Brough Council, and the Royal British Legion, I would be grateful if you could complete this to let me know your views.
For those with an interest in local history, Reading Museum’s online exhibition ‘Reading VE Day in Photos’ has a wonderful collection of photographs capturing the atmosphere in the town, including pictures of many of the street parties and parades held, which can be viewed on the following link: https://www.readingmuseum.org.uk/online-exhibitions/ve-day-75/reading-ve-day-photos
80 years on, I hope that the commemoration events help us pay tribute to the wartime generation in Britain and the Commonwealth who defended our freedom.
If you have an interest in local history and heritage, or if you or your family are members of the Armed Forces community and you would like to know what support is available, please let me know by completing my survey by scanning the QR code on the right, or by visiting https://mattroddamp.com/ve-vj-day2025
