I was recently visited by Clive Betts MP and his team to look at Reading Buses, one of just 11 council-owned bus companies in the UK, to see how they can implement a similar system in Sheffield.
Reading Buses is one of the few council owned bus companies in the UK. This means that profits can be reinvested in the company, improving routes and upgrading vehicles.
A Labour government would allow all councils to follow Reading’s lead and set up new council owned bus companies. The recognised success of Reading Buses shows that public transport can flourish under council ownership.
