Yesterday hundreds of Reading residents demonstrated against the suspension of Kashmir’s autonomy. Kashmir may be very far from Reading, but the situation in Kashmir is very serious and is an immediate concern for many of us in this town.
I have deep concerns about what the Indian government is doing in Kashmir, and I stand in solidarity with those who have been affected. It’s clearly wrong that Kashmiri citizens are facing arbritary arrest and mistreatment.
It is time for a negotiated settlement which respects the views of the people of Kashmir, which understands the history of the province, and which upholds the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
