Matt Rodda Member of Parliament for Reading East
A quick update on the votes last night.
I voted for the following:
· For a second referendum
· For a customs union
· For revoking article 50 if necessary
· And for a Norway option
The results
The votes did show that MPs are moving towards a consensus however, they are moving relatively slowly.
For example:
· Last night a second referendum was defeated by 12 (compared to losing by 27 last week)
· A customs union lost by 3 (compared to losing by 8 last week)
Next steps
I hope the Government will now change tack and support the emerging consensus in favour of a softer Brexit option being developed. And, that this could then be negotiated with the EU and put back to the public in a second referendum, with remain on the ballot paper.
However, we will have to see how the cabinet responds later today. There is also a possibility that MPs will bring a Bill to Parliament on Wednesday offering an alternative approach, this might be able to force the Government to take a different approach.
Matt Rodda, MP.
