Matt Rodda Labour MP for Reading Central
Matt Rodda, the MP for Reading East has called on the Ministry of Justice to work with Reading Borough Council to redevelop Reading Gaol.
Speaking in a debate in Parliament, Matt argued that the gaol’s cultural and artistic significance should be preserved and enhanced through it being turned into a hub for the arts. He also highlighted that regeneration is being held up by the need to survey the site and called on the Minister to speed up this process.
Matt said, “Reading would benefit from a major new theatre and hub for the arts. The town is growing rapidly, and cultural and artistic activity is growing and developing at the same pace. There is a vibrant arts community but a lack of large and nationally recognised venues.”
“This is an important cultural project for Reading and the surrounding area and I would urge all parties to work together to deliver this project.”
Responding for the Government, Lord Commissioner of her Majesty’s Treasury, Paul Maynard, offered to pass on the points made by Matt to Ministers in the relevant Departments.
