Council facing deep cuts

Last week's Reading Council meeting showed the pressure local services are under.

Reading faces deep cuts in funding as the Government has reduced its grant to the council from £40 million a year to just £2 million.

As a result the council is left having to make some very difficult decisions about cutting services.

The grant used to account for about a third of council spending - leaving the council facing some very difficult decisions.

While the Labour council wants to retain vital services the council also has to set a balanced budget.

If the council was to run a deficit commissioners would be sent in by the Government to take over the running of local services, removing any local control over spending decisions.
