Britain only succeeds when working people succeed but, under the Tories, too many working people don’t feel secure in the homes they rent.
People deserve to know the kind of rents they’ll be paying when they start a new tenancy and not to be taken for a ride by landlords who offer huge rent hikes. And they deserve to know they can stay in their home, not be kicked out at a moment's notice.
We’ve got a plan to give “Generation Rent” a better and more secure future - and we’ll get started on it as soon as we’re in government.
That’s why the first Queen’s Speech of the next Labour Government will include laws to:
Cap rents so they cannot rise by more than the rate of inflation during secure three-year tenancies.
Require landlords to disclose the rent levels charged to previous tenants so that householders can negotiate the best possible deal at the start of their contract.
Penalise rogue landlords by reducing buy-to-let tax relief for those who own hundreds or thousands of properties which don’t meet basic standards.
On 8 May, we can get to work building a better, more secure future for young people and families let down by the Tories' failed plan.
