Reading East Labour candidate welcomes a year’s grace for threatened women’s centre
Labour candidate for Reading East, and Katesgrove Councillor, Matt Rodda, has welcomed the Probation Service providing a year’s funding for Alana House which was under threat of closure.
Now Matt is calling for Reading East Conservative MP Rob Wilson and the Government to provide permanent funding.
To show his own commitment to the centre for vulnerable women Matt, who works in the voluntary sector, has been helping staff find grant giving bodies.
He is also running the Reading Half Marathon for the centre, which is on South Street in Katesgrove ward, where he is a councillor.
“Alana House carries out vital work stopping vulnerable women getting sucked into crime and I am delighted resources have been found to help it carry on for another year,” said Matt.
“But I do think the onus is now on Rob Wilson and the Government to continue the funding. It would be a tragedy if an important centre like this had to close after just one year.
“Funding from charitable trusts and other bodies may help but ultimately the £170,000 a-year cost of Alana House is far too great for charities to cover on their own.
“Cuts that threaten organisations like Alana House are short sighted and are likely to create more misery and cost to the tax payer in the longer. The Conservative and Lib Dem Government needs to think again and make a long term commitment.”
