READING EAST MP Matt Rodda attended the site of the Cow Lane Bridges with Reading Borough Councillors to inspect the works following the recent demolition programme.

The site had been problematic for many years for road and foot users alike; being a bottle-neck at peak periods of traffic demand and also unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists due to the narrow elevated walkway, which was further hampered by inadequate lighting provision. One of the railway lines overhead is now disused, allowing the recent demolition work of the railway bridge to proceed; and these works will enable the continuation of the development of the underpass.

 Councillor Tony Page, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Member for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, said:

“I’d like to thank everyone working on the demolition for their efforts in ensuring the work was completed over the weekend, meaning the road could open in good time for the Monday morning rush hour. I’d also thank residents for their patience over the weekend during the closure. The demolition of the old bridge is significant landmark in this project which, when complete, will bring major benefits to the west of Reading and the Oxford Road.”
